September is generally my month for making sure my natural medicine cabinet is well stocked. It just seems to go along with the rhythm of the seasons in our home. But naturally I’m just now, here in February getting around to telling you about my love affair with Elderberry.
I remember when I first discovered Elderberry. I was in college. Knee deep in homework and a head cold. My interest in holistic health had just started and so I sought out natural relief. I ran across some information about Elderberry. Not having the means to make my own syrup, I ran to the most natural grocer I knew, and bought a bottle of syrup.
And guess what? It helped.
I’ve been hearing more and more about Elderberry in the mainstream media. Which is great! More people are empowering themselves when it comes to their health and it must mean elderberry is working.
This syrup is a staple in our home remedy cabinet. Come Fall I always have the ingredients on hand and a jar is ready in the fridge. I find myself making a new batch every couple weeks. We take a teaspoon a day as part of our vitamins. We also enjoy the syrup on sourdough pancakes and the occasional waffle!
Last year I added elderberry bushes to our backyard farm and I’m so excited to have our own source of elderberries soon!

Let’s get to making this Elderberry!
First add your water and Elderberries to a sauce pan over medium heat. Next add the cinnamon, clove, and ginger- not the honey! We don’t add that til after the syrup is cool.
Allow the mixture to come to a boil and then turn the heat down to simmer. Simmer for 1 hour. You want the liquid to reduce by about half. Then strain the liquid into a glass bowl and set to cool. Discard elderberries. Once cooled add in honey.
Yum. Honey is our life.
When honey is combined, store in a glass jar in the fridge. It should last several weeks.
So what makes Elderberry Syrup so awesome?
Elderberries naturally contain vitamins A, B, and C and stimulate the immune system. Add in the medicinal properties of the cinnamon, clove, and honey, and you have a super syrup.
When you are first looking into holistic care for your family you learn that prevention is key. It’s probably the biggest key to success when using natural remedies, herbs, essential oils etc. The good things in elderberry aid in that prevention. Your entire lifestyle plays into that prevention as well. Those aspects need to be examined before you begin using these remedies, or if you’re questioning weather they are working or not. But it is never to late to change add good things to your life. Trust me.
When one of us is feeling under the weather we take elderberry two or three times a day. I’ve seen and felt this remedy stop bugs in the their tracks and offer quick recovery times. Along with our healthy homemade diet and other home remedies we have remained generally healthy and happy through many a cold and flu season.

Don’t want to DIY?
I’ve heard some great reviews of these ready made elderberry syrups. While DIY-ing your own syrup is the most cost effective in the long run, there are many syrups ready made for you! Here are a few I’d buy if I wasn’t making it myself.
