Ear pain. Is there anything worse? Maybe tooth pain. But ear pain. It’s awful. Am I right? A few weeks ago I had an ear ache. No other symptoms. But an ear ache that just wouldn’t quit. I’d pulled out all my best tricks from the oil cabinet but nothing was kicking it and I knew if I didn’t kick it soon, I’d be heading to the clinic to get checked out.

That’s when I remembered reading about Garlic as a treatment for ear infection. At this point I didn’t have much to lose. So I whipped up some garlic oil and was amazed yet again by this home remedy. Almost immediately I had relief. The olive oil was soothing and the garlic was doing it’s antibacterial job.
Garlic oil is great when used holistically. It’s been our go to for years when we feel a cold coming on. It has antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and immune enhancing properties. If you are building a holistic and natural medicine cabinet, garlic should always be in the house. It’s always in ours!
Now, my kids have never had an ear infection to my knowledge. Praise be! So I don’t have much experience with them. But now I know, if an ear infection ever pops up, Garlic Oil will be our go to! Because it was so great I wanted to share the process with you. It’s so crazy simple!
First add 2tbs of olive oil to a pan over low heat. Allow the olive oil to warm, do not let the oil smoke, just warm.
Next mince 2-3 cloves of garlic. You can also just smash them. The key is to get the juices of the garlic moving.
Once the oil is warm add the garlic and stir. Keep the garlic moving, you do not want to burn or brown the garlic. Once the garlic becomes fragrant turn off the burner. Allow to steep for 5-10 mins.
Next strain the oil and garlic. I like to strain into my glass pyrex measuring cup. It makes it easy to transfer into my oil container.
Now you should have some really yummy smelling oil that contains all the natural medicine to kick that pain in the ear outta here!
To store I use a empty and clean essential oil bottle with a dropper. It’s the perfect size.
If you don’t have essential oil bottles, something like this would be another great alternative.
There is some debate as to how long the allicin-the good stuff that kills the bad stuff- properties of garlic last. So making a fresh batch each time you need this ear oil may be wise. But that is totally up to you. It might work great when kept for longer periods of time. Truth be told, this batch is still in our home and if I needed it I’d get it out and try it before making new!
To use, allow the garlic oil to cool. You can put 2-3 drops in the sore ear as needed, I started out with 3 times a day and backed off when I started to feel relief. Allow oil to sit in ear for around 5 minutes. If you have to be up and moving while you have the oil in, a cotton ball works great!
Safety Note: Never use this oil if the ear drum has burst or if the ear has tubes
That’s it! Now you have a healthy, homemade, and effective ear infection remedy at your fingertips.
